Position Breakdown: Part 5 – Tight Ends
The Grambling State University football program is doing a nine-part series, as we look to breakdown each position. Today, we wrap up the offense with our tight ends
Position Coach: Ryan Weston
This week, we have focused on the offensive lineman and now shift to the tight ends… a position that not only covers catching the football, but also helps with blocking.
First-year coach Ryan Weston takes over the duties at the position and said the tight ends have adjusted well during fall camp.
“They (the tight ends) have been great and have been locked in susceptible to coaching,” he said. “I think the measure of any group is how they take coaching and how they apply it onto the field. My group has listened extremely well and taken what we’ve been working on, apply it on the field and we are getting better every day. I’m really proud of them.”
Weston, a native of Bangor, Maine, not only is learning about this tight end group, but is also adjusting to the heat.
“Just like we tell our players, it’s all about how you take care of yourself by hydrating before you come out here,” he said. “It’s hot out here, but this is what we play in and this is what we deal with. It’s been great. It’s been a lot of fun gettingused to it and it beats the heck out of snow.”
Weston also spoke about working with head coach Hue Jackson and how he is the ultimate professional.
“Coach Jackson is the ultimate professional,” he said. “In everything he does, he handles it in a professional manner and he expects that with the people under him. I’m expected to take my coaching to the next level and apply that to our guys and he has high expectations for me and that translates right down to our football team. He’s been a tremendous influence. He’s great to learn from and it’s been a pleasure to be a part of this staff and see where we can take this team.”
Grambling State returns a pair of tight ends off last year’s squad that accounted for two touchdowns. Expect bit things from this group not just in catching passes, but providing that key block downfield.
